Lightning Brain ImpositionCompanion for InDesign

Goal

The ImpositionCompanion Plug-In helps to overcome some limitations of InBooklet SE, which doesn't impose correctly when a document contains objects that overlap two or more pages.

The ImpositionCompanion Plug-In unlinks text threads and splits objects which overlap two or more pages. This allows the page order to be changed without problems.

Download

This is a free download. Before you can use the LB ImpositionCompanion Plug-In you also have to install our free APID ToolAssistant Plug-In, which is available as a second, separate download.

LB ImpositionCompanion supports InDesign CS and CS2 on Mac or Windows.

Download ImpositionCompanion Scripted Plugin (version 1.0 - Free download - does not include the APID ToolAssistant. Don't worry about the icon of the .spln file: it will not be a 'regular' icon, and that's OK.)
IMPORTANT: The ReadMe file in this download still mentions the outdated Active Page Item Runtime plug-in. Instead you should install the APID ToolAssistant plug-in shown below.

Download APID ToolAssistant for InDesign (version 1.0.46 - Free)

You don't need to purchase a license for APID ToolAssistant (but we're always grateful if you do - it helps us fund further development). The LB ImpositionCompanion Plug-In will work fine with an unlicensed APID ToolAssistant.

To encourage us by purchasing such an optional license, select the API - APID ToolAssistant... menu item, select the 'APID ToolAssistant' entry in the list, and click the Get License... button. Purchasing a license helps us fund further development of cool stuff!

Version history:

5-September-2006 - Version 1.0: Initial Beta release.

Installation:

Please make sure you have a copy of the APID ToolAssistant Plug-In installed.

Make sure you install the proper plug-in for your version of InDesign. InDesign CS Plug-Ins and InDesign CS2 Plug-Ins are mutually incompatible.

If you already have an APID ToolAssistant Plug-In installed (e.g. because you use one of our other Scripted Plug-Ins), make sure it is up-to-date.

APID ToolAssistant used to be called 'Active Page Item Runtime' - if you have any copies of Active Page Item Runtime or Active Page Item Developer installed, please remove them, and replace them with APID ToolAssistant.

When installing Plug-Ins make sure you copy Plug-In files, not the folders they are contained in.

Copy the ImpositionCompanion.spln into the same folder as the APID ToolAssistant Plug-In you installed (typically that will be the InDesign Plug-Ins folder).

Usage

To use ImpositionCompanion, proceed as follows:

- Open a document of your choice.

- Check the API menu item that should sit on the menu bar for the new ImpostionCompanion menu.
Important: The ImpositionCompanion menu doesn't appear in the API menu if there is no document currently open.

- The ImpositionCompanion menu has two options:
Unlink Stories
Split Objects

The first option, Unlink Stories, will unlink all the text threads in the document.

The second option, Split Objects, is an extension of the first option. It will first unlink all the text threads and then split any objects which overlap two or more pages.

You will be asked to save your original document if it has not been saved since the last modification.

As an extra safeguard, all modifications will be done on a copy of the original document.

Important: This operation should only be performed when you have finished editing the document and are ready to impose. The copy of the document that is created by the ImpositionCompanion will be virtually unusable for any further editing. If you need to make any changes, you should go back to your original document, make the changes, and then run ImpositionCompanion again.
