Thanks for the comments; good ideas! I've actually put some thought into the first suggestion, and decided against it. As far as I can estimate, many people want InDesignProxy to be plug and play. If they are on a computer with CS3 and CS4 installed, and they get a lot of CS2 documents coming in, what they really want is to open these documents in whatever version - without being hindered by an additional dialog to click through. The dialog would 'break the rythm' of the work they do.
Choosing the closest version is the least 'dangerous' approach - i.e. if later on, one needs to 'undo' such an inadvertent version upgrade of the document, going back from CS3 to CS2 is less painful than going back from CS4 to CS2 - so I decided to pick the 'closest version'.
Of course, for other people this is not what they want - in a lot of cases, it would make more sense to have the dialog come up as you indicate (e.g. when getting a CS2 document is a 'rare occurrence' and you'd rather be alerted to it).
I had to weigh each possible scenario - and in the end decided that I'd rather not have the dialog. It's a purely gut decision - I have no hard statistics to back it up though!
Once we have 'Son of InDesignProxy' available (we're working on that - it'll support a much wider range of apps - both Adobe and non-Adobe), we'll make that behavior configurable - so you'll be able to make the program do what you want.
With regards to the dialog - yes, it could be improved upon. But on the other hand, you have to realize that InDesignProxy is mainly a 'labor of love' - we need to make sure our little company earns enough to keep the kids in school, the families fed and warm - so InDesignProxy will have to do with 'good enough' instead of 'perfect'. We know it's nowhere near perfect - and we cannot afford to make it perfect; we have to strike a balance between what we give away and generating some income.
Cheers,
Kris

Hi Adi,

Thanks for the comments; good ideas! I’ve actually put some thought into the first suggestion, and decided against it. One thing though regarding "If any version is unavailable when you drop a document, it will ‘pick’ the closest higher version that is available".
Instead of "picking" the closest version available to open the dropped document, why not display the 'Open With' dialog and let the user choose from the available ones?
Also, the dialog size can be reduce if (1) the unavailable versions will not display, and (2) instead of radio buttons you'll use a drop-down list to select the available versions (listing InDesign versions at the top portion, and InCopy at the bottom).

Great tool.<br

Hmm... - I just tried it, and it seems to work from my end. Maybe a hiccup somewhere in-between? Try clearing the browser's cache, or try another browser (e.g. Firefox <-> Safari) - see what happens...

After some head-scratching we found that it doesn't work well if you have some special characters in any of the paths to the document or the applications.
The most likely culprit is the hard disk name - so if your hard disk is named something 'special' like
•••MyDisk•••
try changing it to a more boring name, using only letters, spaces and digits.
We'll attempt to cure this in the next release...

Side note: we’ve got some feedback that InDesignProxy 1.0.5 fails on some systems.
