Hi Serge,

Thanks for stopping by and letting us know - that definitely sounds like a bug! I've forwarded your post to Joris - he'll be in touch to find out more.

The 60 vs. 20 days was an oversight on our part - the beta version had a 60 day timeout, and with the first release that should have become 20 days - but here and there some materials still mention 60. Sorry for the confusion! I've adjusted the web page so it now says 20...

Cheers,

Hello,
I have downloaded the trial version of StoryTweaker, but I'm running in some errors...
I can follow the procedure until I come to the point that I have to create the Assignements.
From the moment I click the green 'plus' symbol, I get following error:
"An exception of class NilObjectException was not handled. The application must shut down".
I'm using StoryTweaker on a Mac with OS 10.5 and Indesign CS3.

Also very strange: the trial version should last 60 days, but from the day I installed it, it says 20 days...

Thanks for you answer/solution.

Hi Dan,

Check out this one:

which handles text edits. While writing the above article, I bumped into some StoryTweaker bugs, so stay tuned for an updated version!

Hi Dan,

Will do; I'll write another 'cookbook' type of description soon.

The short of it: the main thing to send out one or more assignments.

Any particular story in the layout should only be changed by one particular assignee - i.e. StoryTweaker cannot resolve the issues that arise if multiple people start changing the same story. But as long as each assignee only changes one story (and no other assignee changes that same story), things work fine.

Once all assignments are returned, the trick is to select all of the assignments in the StoryTweaker Assignments window, and generate an InDesign document from the Tweak Set. Because all assignments are selected, they will all be merged into the newly generated document.

So, you could tell John to check the story on 'Tsunami Dangers in Wisconsin', Mark can do the 'Silver Cutlery' one, and Mary will proofread 'The Risks of Getting Rich'. You send an Assignment to each of them, they work on their assigned stories, and once you get all assignments back, you select all three assignments and generate a new document.

The book idea - good idea! StoryTweaker 1.0 does not support that, but I'll put it up on the todo list for one of the next releases...

Cheers,

Kris can you give another example with just text editing (like corrections) and not translations.

Also would I be asking too much to make StoryTweaker create a Tweak Set from a group of documents that form a book in an InDesign Book?

Hi Adi,

Thanks for the comments; good ideas! I've actually put some thought into the first suggestion, and decided against it. As far as I can estimate, many people want InDesignProxy to be plug and play. If they are on a computer with CS3 and CS4 installed, and they get a lot of CS2 documents coming in, what they really want is to open these documents in whatever version - without being hindered by an additional dialog to click through. The dialog would 'break the rythm' of the work they do.

Choosing the closest version is the least 'dangerous' approach - i.e. if later on, one needs to 'undo' such an inadvertent version upgrade of the document, going back from CS3 to CS2 is less painful than going back from CS4 to CS2 - so I decided to pick the 'closest version'.

Of course, for other people this is not what they want - in a lot of cases, it would make more sense to have the dialog come up as you indicate (e.g. when getting a CS2 document is a 'rare occurrence' and you'd rather be alerted to it).

I had to weigh each possible scenario - and in the end decided that I'd rather not have the dialog. It's a purely gut decision - I have no hard statistics to back it up though!

Once we have 'Son of InDesignProxy' available (we're working on that - it'll support a much wider range of apps - both Adobe and non-Adobe), we'll make that behavior configurable - so you'll be able to make the program do what you want.

With regards to the dialog - yes, it could be improved upon. But on the other hand, you have to realize that InDesignProxy is mainly a 'labor of love' - we need to make sure our little company earns enough to keep the kids in school, the families fed and warm - so InDesignProxy will have to do with 'good enough' instead of 'perfect'. We know it's nowhere near perfect - and we cannot afford to make it perfect; we have to strike a balance between what we give away and generating some income.

Cheers,

Kris

Great tool.
One thing though regarding "If any version is unavailable when you drop a document, it will ‘pick’ the closest higher version that is available".
Instead of "picking" the closest version available to open the dropped document, why not display the 'Open With' dialog and let the user choose from the available ones?

Also, the dialog size can be reduce if (1) the unavailable versions will not display, and (2) instead of radio buttons you'll use a drop-down list to select the available versions (listing InDesign versions at the top portion, and InCopy at the bottom).
