StoryTweaker is a tool that allows for text edits of a master Adobe® InDesign® file by multiple users, without needing a copy of InDesign for the text edits. A StoryTweaker license is associated with an InDesign workstation, and costs US$99.00 per seat.

StoryTweaker is available for both PCs and Macs, and helps edit the text content of an InDesign document, no matter which platform it was created on.

StoryTweaker’s users include
• editors who want a document translated to another language, ie, English to Spanish
• designers who hand off a finished layout to writers that will provide the content
• writers/editors collaborating on a project

The StoryTweaker system is composed of two separate application programs:

• The first application program is called StoryTweaker. StoryTweaker does not work directly with InDesign files. Instead it works with a special folder structure called a Tweak Set.

The StoryTweaker application program is used by an InDesign user to manage a Tweak Set. It is also used to convert any InDesign document file into a Tweak Set and back. This part of the StoryTweaker system is priced at US$99.00, excl. sales taxes, per installed copy of InDesign.

• The second application program is called AssignmentTweaker. It is used by writers, translators, editors… – anyone who needs to work on the text content of an InDesign document. The owner of a StoryTweaker license is allowed to freely distribute as many copies as needed of AssignmentTweaker to all his collaborators – there is no per-seat cost.

There is a very clear delineation of responsibilities: the user of AssignmentTweaker can only influence text content.No layout changes can be made, no new text styles can be created,… – that responsibility remains with the designer.

The StoryTweaker workflow starts from an InDesign Document, and ends with one or more modified copies of the document.

First, the original InDesign document is ‘frozen’ inside a Tweak Set to protect it against inadvertent modification.

The Tweak Set then becomes the control center – from the Tweak Set, one or more Assignments are created and sent out to anyone who needs to tweak the text of the document.

Each assignment comes complete with a copy of the free AssignmentTweaker application.

Multiple assignments can be created and worked on concurrently (e.g. the translations to Spanish and to German could be assigned to different people, and they could work on them concurrently).

Once an assignment is finished and returns to its originator (e.g. text translated or corrections made), it is imported back into the Tweak Set.

Finally, tweaked versions of the original document can be extracted from the Tweak Set – e.g. in case of the translations, a Spanish and a German version of the original document could be extracted from the Tweak Set.
